New Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 Delivers Industry’s Most Advanced Policy Management, Enforcement and Auditing Capabilities for Microsoft Windows Rights Management Services

Powerful New Features Offer Enterprise and Public Sector Organizations Compliance Solutions for Windows RMS; Extends Information Controls to Mobile Workforce Without Impacting Productivity

GARTNER IT Security Summit -- Washington, D.C. -- - June 5, 2006 -- Liquid Machines, Inc., the leading provider of Enterprise Rights Management solutions, today announced the availability of Liquid Machines Document Control™ 6.0 – the latest release of its industry leading document protection solution that persistently protects information at rest, in motion, and in use.

Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 builds on the success and core features of earlier versions of Liquid Machines solutions to deliver Microsoft Windows RMS customers the industry’s most advanced enterprise management, policy enforcement, application support and user collaboration capabilities. Using a web-based interface, business users can easily define corporate policies that control access to and usage of unstructured content such as Office documents, Visio diagrams, and CAD files. In support of many customers increasing compliance initiatives, Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 adds detailed application-level auditing capabilities that allows evidentiary-quality compliance reports as required by information protection regulations (i.e. HIPAA, SEC 17a-4, GLB, SB1386). Additionally, Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 extends RMS protection to over 65 applications and file formats while offering end-users full use of native application functions such as ‘cut/copy/paste’ and ‘convert to .pdf’ operations.

“The latest edition of our flagship product, Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0, enables RMS customers to deploy an enterprise solution that addresses their confidential data protection and compliance challenges,” said Ed Gaudet, vice president of product management and marketing at Liquid Machines. “Together, Liquid Machines and Windows RMS deliver customers the confidence and the freedom to aggressively use information in pursuit of competitive advantage and business growth.”

“Our clients depend on us to help them create innovative business solutions that positively impact their business,” said Jeff Dimock, Managing Partner, Infrastructure Practice, at Intellinet Corporation. “We’ve partnered with Liquid Machines because Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 builds on Windows RMS’ infrastructure and security services with exactly the type of collaboration and management features our customers need to enable new ways of doing business securely.”

Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 delivers the following new features and capabilities:

Policy Management:

  • Enterprise-controlled Policies: A web-based administrative console puts information control in the hands of the enterprise by enabling business users and delegated policy administrators to easily create and manage corporate policies that define who can access files and what they can do with them (i.e. open, read, copy, edit, save, etc.). Enterprise-controlled policies differ from RMS templates by adding support for auditing, allowing policy administration by business users, limiting individual user abilities to remove protection, and enabling role-based content expiration.
  • Role-based Policies: Roles define groups of users with the same rights to a file. Role-based policies give the enterprise an easy way to manage large numbers of users. Users in different roles can have different rights to the exact same file. Policy administrators can quickly add or remove Active Directory users or groups to a role without having to change the Active Directory itself.
  • Decentralized and Delegated Administration: Allows organizations to decentralize administrative functions while limiting administrators’ capabilities appropriately.  Policy management and auditing functions are designed to be managed outside the IT organization through an easy-to-use, web-based administrator interface.
  • Expiration: Enhances RMS global policy-level expiration by allowing expiration to be defined at the role level within a policy.  This allows enterprises to expire documents for one set of users, but not others, so valid users continue to work with protected documents without the need to republish content.

Policy Enforcement and Auditing:

  • Auditing: Adds detailed application-level auditing to RMS implementations. Audit data is stored in the SQL Server database and can be easily accessed by business administrators through a web-based query facility in the Liquid Machines administration console. Auditing is an option that may be set independently for each policy and results can be exported for use in third-party reporting tools.
  • Dynamic Rights Updates: Enables real-time updates of enterprise-controlled policies.
  • Advanced Offline: Offline rights may be managed at the policy level, where they may be set to either allowed or denied. Advanced enforcement options allow offline rights to be specified at each role and be set to a number of days.
  • Revocation: Allows enterprise to revoke user rights at any time and does not require revocation lists to be defined in advance. A policy administrator can simply remove a user from a role and that person will immediately lose all rights under that policy.

User Experience:

  • Liquid Machines Policy Droplet™ control: Provides consistency of user experience across all applications. Users rely on the Liquid Machines Policy Droplet control within applications to view the rights governing a file and to apply or change policy. Users can select enterprise-controlled policies, ad hoc policies, or RMS templates. The governing policy is always visible so users can see if and how the document is protected with out taking any explicit action.
  • Protection of Derivative Content: Liquid Machines enables RMS protection not only within a single document, but as protected content moves between managed applications.  This enables users to securely cut/copy and paste protected content within the same document, as well as paste protected content into another application.  The policy governing the excerpted content is automatically applied to the resulting document.  Users can also convert protected documents to .pdf files or save the document to non-native file formats without losing protection.
  • Application Support and Interoperability: Extends RMS protection beyond Office 2003 to more than 65 applications and file formats including Office XP, Adobe Acrobat and Reader, and Microsoft Visio. Liquid Machines Document Control 6.0 helps to protect content as it searched, sent or stored using enterprise search tools (i.e. Google Mini), email applications (i.e. Exchange, SMTP, and BlackBerry), and files shares. An integration toolkit with documented interfaces for content protection and policy management (APIs) enable integration with many third-party applications including Oracle, SAP, and Siebel as well as custom-developed business applications such as deal rooms and human resource applications.
